Resumo

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Renal carcinoma (RCC) is a relatively rare tumor. However, it is the most lethal of the urological neoplasms. More than half of all RCCs are diagnosed at a localized stage, with open radical nephrectomy being the standard curative intervention for the treatment of this type of tumor. With the adjunct to minimally invasive surgery, partial and laparoscopic nephrectomy has emerged as a preference in large centers, mainly for the preservation of post-procedure renal function. However, the long wait for access to the specialist and the lack of information, unfortunately, bring us more complex conditions, with tumors of greater size and complexity that make it difficult to perform such a technique. Objective: To trace the epidemiological profile of patients undergoing radical nephrectomies open at the urology service of the Mandaqui Hospital Complex. Methodology: This is a descriptive observational study in which 20 medical records of patients who underwent open radical nephrectomy due to kidney cancer by the Urology team at the Mandaqui Hospital Complex between January 2018 and December 2021 will be analyzed retrospectively, randomly selected. Result: Of the 20 randomly selected patients, 40% (n = 8) were men with a mean age of 74 years (67 - 80). While women corresponded to 60% (n = 12) of the public studied with a mean age of 58 years (39 - 72). The general average corresponded to 65.5 years with an average length of hospital stay of 6.63 days. Only 10% of patients (n = 2) had complications during the hospitalization period. All procedures were performed by laparotomy. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the high volume of radical nephrectomies in the service is explained by the advanced characteristics of the tumors at the time of diagnosis, which requires more comprehensive interventions. This is due both to the difficulty encountered by the population in accessing tertiary public services and to prior misinformation and comorbidities.
